Photographer Pedro Guimarães shoot the cover article for National Geographic Magazine (Portugal) September issue. The "50th Anniversary of the Capelinhos Eruption" is featured along 18pages of azorean Faial and Pico islands landscapes, portraits of people who witnessed the natural phenomenae and scientific documentary. Congratulations to Pedro for his publication on a rare cover article made by portuguese authors for the magazine.

FLAVIO FOREVER

On the 26th February 2007, The Brazilian Photographer Flavio Cannalonga, a co-founder and member of our partner agency Arcapress, died at the age of 53, after a battle with cancer. He left a memorable work with focus on social documentary with a humanistic approach.

Born in Sao Paulo in 1953 and Photographer since 1977, he worked for several newspapers in Brazil. In 1992 became an independent photographer, involved in social documentary with a humanistic approach, connected with the Brazil’s Landless Workers’ Movement -MST, Greenpeace.org, Survival International.org., and Tribal People in Latin America.

Cannalonga’s works include coverage of Guarani, Chapare, Chipaia, Deni, Macuxi and Yanomani People.

Cannalonga is survived by his wife Elena, two daughters Maria and Ananda, and a son Francisco.

FNAC EXHIBITION

If you live in Lisbon or you are just passing you can attend Marco Pereira and Sara Wong's exhibition at Fnac Colombo until 15th March. “ Folia do Divino” depicts the Divine Holy Spirit Feast, held ever year, 50 days after Easter in the brazilian town of Pirenopolis. The town and surrounding countryside are ran by hordes of horsemen and euphoric “mascarados” and invaded by thousands of attendants from all over the country, conquered by the colorful splendor of the Folia do Divino (Divine spree) and of the local Cavalhadas, a peculiar reconstitution of the medieval crusades. BRAVA - THE ISLAND OF THE BRAVE

Brave are the ones that live in Brava. Brave are the ones that decide to travel there. Remote, isolated, these can be ironic words to describe an island only 15km distant from neighbouring Fogo island. But rough sea conditions and no plane connections makes this tiny capeverdian island a destination or a home only for the fearless.
The smallest of the islands that compose Cape Verde archipelago has the "Flowers island" nickname due to its mild climate, and its charming capital Nova Sintra proudly shows its simple colonial architecture as a jewel.

Our beloved Lisbon is getting more and more people visiting it. Taking the risk of beeing very suspicious to the foreigner, we can say that we live in one of the most beautiful places in Europe! ROBINSON CRUSOE

Travel features from Marco and Sara are beeing regularly published in portuguese travel magazine "Rotas&Destinos" and the "Robinson Crusoe Island" feature is another example of this colaboration. Part of the remote Juan Fernandez archipelago the island never welcomed the legend but was the forced home of Alexander Selkirk, the stranded sailor whose story inspired the “Robinson Crusoe” novel.

Just uploaded to our archive, Lura Song and Cafés con Piernas (Cafes with legs) are the two most recent stories by photographers Jordi Burch, Marco Pereira and Sara Wong.

Capeverdian singer Lura was nominated for the 2006 BBC World Music Awards and is commonly said to be the heiress of world famous diva Cesária Évora's legacy. Close to publish her 4th album, Lura's tour passed by her parents homecountry Cape Verde when she played in Santa Maria Music festival, in touristy Sal island. Next concerts will take her to The Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and France. Check her official website here.

After their heyday in the late 90s, some Cafés con Piernas still resist in Chilean capital Santiago, employing half-naked women to combine erotic stimulation with the one provided by coffee. Marco and Sara pictured the ambiance of two of these cafes that got their nicknames adapted by locals because of smoked glass screens that protected the identities of those inside but allowed the view of women legs.

A GREEK DREAM

Nearly only one week after representing 4SEE in Greece, newborn agency Invision Images signs the start of our collaboration placing Jordi Burch's feature "Dreamer's Lens" in Epsilon magazine.

This story tell us about the life in a models school founded by a photographer in the movie famous"City of God" favela in Rio de Janeiro.

MILA IN LISBON FOR TRAINEESHIP

Mila Jovanovic arrived last week in Lisbon to start her internship in 4SEE. She came to Portugal for six months with a scholarship from Trieste University where she degreed in "Sciences and tecniques of Intercultural relations". Mila will develop her photojournalistic skills both by learning how to approch photographic subjects and understanding story and photoshop editing.

JOANA MALHEIRO TEST WORKS

As a part of her internship in our agency, Joana has been doing some features. She finished her work about the ballet performance "AmarAmalia" and now she is picturing the life of typical Lisbon neighborhood Bairro Alto.
In the last decade, the Bairro Alto district has seen a return to it's former glory as the most charismatic area of Lisbon's nightlife. Every night, thousands of "pilgrims" fill the numerous bars, restaurants and hot-spots, dripping onto the cobbled labyrintic streets and providing a colourful, multicultural atmosphere. All types of music, easthetic and people can find their particular corner in the Bairro Alto, and still rub shoulders with everyone else.
Joana tried to capture the particular atmosphere of this magical place, visiting 3 of the most distintive atmospheres in the area in three bars. Electronica, Fado, and Goth Metal music styles.

LUIS FAUSTINO PICTURES WILDFIRES

4SEE's intern photographer Luis Faustino has been following the work of the firemen of Mação, one of the portuguese villages that over the last years was most affected with forest fires.
He also shot the life and leisure in "Pego do Inferno", a river beach at Algarve which attracts many visitors, both local and foreign.

Bass player Ken Filiano is greeted by his friend Pedro Costa when arriving at Lisbon Airport. Ken released some records in the independent portuguese label "Clean Feed" in which Pedro is one of the founders.

During last year three editions of "Jazz ao Centro" Festival", held in portuguese Coimbra town, Luis Filipe Catarino has been portraying some of the finest contemporary improvisation musicians. In last November and June editions of the Festival, he exhibited some of the work he's been doing. Now we make these pictures available in our archive.

CLEAN FEED RECORDS WITH 4SEE PICTURES

Portuguese independent jazz label Clean Feed released this month three new records with pictures by photographer Luis Filipe Catarino.

Bass player and composer Adam Lane and his Full Throttle Orchestra new CD New Magical Kingdom counts with photos that Luis shot during Coimbra´s Jazz Festival while Lane did a workshop and directed JACC Festival's Orchestra.

The Will Holshouser Trio latest Singing to a Bee also features a picture from Catarino. Their new CD was live recorded at Algarve's capital city Faro, in a performance that this accordeon, trumpet and violin trio did in beautiful Lethes Theatre. The album cover reproduces the venue ceiling with bee artwork from graphic designer Rui Garrido.

Finnaly, promising multi-cultural-multi-national Imi Kollektief has a group portrait inside their debut album Snug as a Gun. The quintet members come from countries like Brazil, France, Belgium and Portugal, and their natural adaptability and passion are the driving force on a quest to seek sounds beyond norms and tradtions.

NICARAGUA FROM THE ARCHIVE

Jose Ventura shot this story in July 2004 about historical characters from the Sandinista Revolution and the country's political mood on the 25th Anniversary of the Revolution.

Next November Presidential elections will be held and former sandinista President Daniel Ortega, and ex-sandinista and former contra Eden Pastora (also known as Comandante 0) are running for the job.

The elections are a good reason to dig in our archive and highlight this pictures again.

JOANA AND LUIS START THEIR INTERNSHIP

Luis Faustino and Joana Malheiro are the first interns our agency receives. Both ended their photography courses at Etic and their work is now starting to be followed by our photographers, who will help them on how to choose their stories, approaching subjects and story angles and editing the body of each work.

Luis is shooting a story about a Lisbon tram line where every weekend, during Summer season, Fado music is played live for tourists and portuguese audience. Trams are overcrowded with public.

He is also following foreign immigrants while they watch World Cup Football matches, or while they work during those matches.

Joana is collecting information on a story about Philippine house-keepers living in Portugal and is also starting to shoot "AmarAmalia" rehearsals, a ballet performance by Portugal's "Companhia Portuguesa de Bailado Contemporaneo", who has captured audiences around the world with their passionate, energetic performances. While celebrating the great fado singer Amalia Rodrigues in "Amaramalia Abandono", the Company had tremendous success on their Broadway shows, as related by "The New York Times":
"The choreographer Vasco Wellenkamp has perfectly captured the untethered yearning of the fado, Portugal's national song, and channeled it into the explosive vigor of the dancers, who roused the audience."

MARCO AND SARA RETURN FROM A FIVE MONTH TRIP IN SOUTH AMERICA

Photographers Marco Pereira and Sara Wong just got back to Portugal from South America. They're now editing thousands of images they made on a route that revealed breathtaking landscapes and intriguing life expressions such as the Cafés con Piernas of Santiago de Chile, where coffee and cappuccinos (but no alcohol) are served by very lightly dressed ladies that welcome every customer with tender kisses and warm conversation. This and many other new features will soon be online.

Photographer Jordi Burch had his feature "The Golden Years" published in portuguese weekly "Expresso" magazine "Unica". The story is on child labour/work and he followed the daily life of some working peruvian children on their pursuit for a better life for them and for their families.
